Heard a professor tell students not to take notes on a certain topic in class

I was sitting in the back of a political science lecture at my community college in Portland last Tuesday. The professor stopped mid-sentence and said everyone should put their pens down while he discussed a specific case about a local protest. He said it was just for context and not on the exam, but it felt weird that he didn't want anyone writing it down. A kid next to me whispered that the school had a policy against recording any discussion of controversial events. I thought college was supposed to be the place where you dig into messy stuff, not skip over it. The whole thing made me wonder what else gets quietly dropped from lectures. Has anyone else had a teacher ask you to stop writing something down?
