I finally stopped fighting the campus free speech table, here's why
Used to walk right past the free speech table in the quad at Ohio State, thought it was just a bunch of kids yelling into the void. Then last October a girl handed me a flyer with a quote from a professor who got suspended for a single tweet, and I actually read the whole thing. Realized I'd been assuming the admin was always fair, but that flyer listed three specific cases with dates and emails. Now I stop and listen for five minutes, even if I disagree, and I ask them for their sources. Has anyone else changed their mind about these campus tables after actually talking to the people running them?

Last year at Kent State I used to think those tables were just theater, but a guy handed me a printed timeline of a librarian who got fired over a book display and I checked every link on my phone right there. The records matched what he said, and that made me realize I'd been writing off the people before checking their facts. Now I grab their flyers and look up what they cite, even if I still don't agree with most of it.
