I got a formal warning for handing out flyers about a campus debate
Last semester, my student group tried to organize a panel on free speech itself, with speakers from different political sides. We printed 500 flyers to put up around the quad. Campus security stopped us, said we needed approval from the Dean's office first, which would take three weeks. They said our event could 'cause disruption.' Isn't the point of debate to sometimes disrupt comfortable ideas? Has anyone else had an event shut down before it even started over vague rules?

What's the point of a debate club then?

Right? The point is learning how to argue for any side, even one you hate. It's not about winning, it's about understanding how the other side thinks.
