In 2003 I had to pick between the campus paper and a professor's class, and I picked wrong
Back at Ohio State in 2003 I wrote a column for the student paper about a professor who gave out his home number to students, nothing mean, just that it seemed odd, and the next week the journalism school dean called me in. I could either print a retraction and apologize or lose my spot in a required senior seminar, and I picked the retraction because I was 21 and scared of not graduating. Has anyone else had to pick between saying sorry for something you still stand behind and staying on track?
Question whether the dean really had that kind of pull over a required seminar. At most schools a dean can lean on a department, but they can't just boot you from a class you need to graduate because of an opinion piece. Sounds more like a bluff that worked because you were 21 and scared, which honestly most of us would have fallen for too. Take this with a grain of salt since I don't know how OSU worked back then, but the threat might have been softer than it felt.
