Noticed professors labeling debate as 'harm' in my psychology 101 class

Tbh I keep seeing teachers shut down discussions by calling them 'potentially harmful' before anyone even speaks. In my intro psych class last month, the professor said we couldn't discuss a study on gender differences because it might 'create a hostile environment.' Has anyone else had a class where they just assume what you'll say is bad?

Yeah that tracks with what I've seen too. It's like the moment a topic gets labeled as "controversial" the prof just shuts the whole thing down instead of letting people actually talk. Had a sociology class where we couldn't discuss income inequality because someone might feel bad about their own financial situation. Totally missed the point of learning how to handle uncomfortable ideas in a respectful way.

Right? Might as well just cancel class and tell everyone to stay in their safe little bubble forever. @the_elizabeth guess we just missed the whole point of actually learning something.
