Realized my old student newspaper columns read like a lecture, not a conversation

Back in 2013 I wrote this piece for our campus paper about free speech zones and thought I was being so brave. Then last week I dug it up and saw I spent half the column quoting the university handbook instead of saying what I actually thought. That moment hit me, I had been so worried about getting disciplined that I censored my own voice before anyone else could. Anyone else look back at old writing from college and see how much self-policing was already baked in?

Ugh, that self-censorship thing is so real... but here's what gets me, do you think the person you were back then actually knew they were holding back, or was it like, fully subconscious until just now?
