I was reading through my university's faculty handbook last month and found a stat that 68% of professors in a 1993 study supported limiting certain classroom topics before any trigger warning trend existed. That number felt way higher than I expected for a time before online outrage was even a thing. The 1993 number probably says more about how faculty viewed academic freedom back then than people want to admit. Those same professors likely supported banning speakers they disagreed with, not protecting students from distress. The real shift is that trigger warnings gave an official label to something that was always happening informally. If anything, the current debate just made the old bias more visible instead of creating it.
