The library quiet floor rule is now a joke at UW-Madison
Back in 1998, if you even whispered on the fourth floor of Memorial Library, someone would shush you and a librarian might ask you to leave. Now my daughter goes there and students are having full phone conversations, watching videos out loud, and one group was even doing a group project presentation. Campus policy changed around 2016 to make all floors 'collaborative learning spaces' and they removed the old zone signs. Has anyone else watched their old study haunts turn into something unrecognizable?
Ugh, I used to roll my eyes at the old rules and thought people were just being uptight about the quiet floors. Then I spent a Saturday at Memorial last fall trying to read for a class and had to give up because a guy next to me was on FaceTime with his girlfriend for a solid hour. The thing that bugs me is there's no quiet space left at all now, so where are people supposed to go? I came around on the whole thing after that day, you kind of don't know what you had until it's gone.
