Thought I could reserve a room for our debate club in 10 minutes, took 3 campus offices and a whole month
So our student debate club wanted to bring in a speaker who argued that hate speech laws go too far, and I figured reserving a room would be the easy part. I walked into the student center at 9am on a Tuesday thinking I would be out by 9:10. The front desk lady looked at the topic on my form and said I needed to talk to the Office of Student Life instead. That office sent me to the Dean of Students, who sent me back to Student Life, who finally said the room request had to go through a committee that meets every other Friday. Three Fridays later they asked me to submit a written statement about why the event was educational, which took me a whole weekend to write. Then they moved us to a room in the basement of the library that fits 15 people, and told me we could not put up flyers anywhere except one corkboard behind the vending machines. Total time from that first Tuesday to the actual approved room: 31 days. Has anyone else gone through a campus approval maze like this, and did you just give up or keep pushing?
