TIL: A student paper in Tampa ran my op-ed, while a class assignment got me sent to a dean over the same words
Back in October I wrote an op-ed for the school paper at USF about a tuition hike, and it ran with my name on it, no problem. Two weeks later I turned in almost the same argument as a class essay and my professor reported me to the dean for making people uncomfortable. How is published speech okay but the same words in a classroom a problem?
Tbh this same thing kind of happened to me when I wrote about the dining hall workers' pay for the student paper, then used it for my writing class. What saved me was pulling up the printed article and showing my prof the exact same sentences were already out there with my name on it. I told her straight up that if the school was fine printing it, I didn't get why my classroom was different. She ended up dropping the whole thing, but I also learned to add a little note at the top of stuff like that saying it was previously published. Might help to keep the clipping handy in case it comes up again.
