TIL my community college had a secret speech code hidden in the student handbook

I always thought my community college in Phoenix was pretty open about letting people talk. Then last spring I got a warning for handing out flyers about a union meeting for house cleaners. The dean told me I violated a policy about 'solicitation' that I never even knew existed. I dug through the student handbook online and found a whole section banning any 'controversial speech' on campus unless approved three days in advance. That really opened my eyes to how colleges can quietly restrict what you say without you knowing. Has anyone else found weird rules like that buried in their school's paperwork?

Honestly gotta push back a little here. Those rules exist for a reason - keeping campus calm and focused on learning instead of turning into a shouting match every day. @jaken23, yours probably had something similar to mine: we had a rule about not setting up tables in the main hallway during lunch rush because it blocked fire exits. Nobody read the handbook so they blamed administration when they got a warning. Most students don't even know what controversial speech means until someone hands them a flyer with a political rant they don't agree with. Three day approval sounds like a fair compromise to me.

I think I remember reading that around 40 percent of community colleges have hidden speech codes like that.

Man I found the exact same thing at my college in Texas, buried on page 47 of the handbook like they hoped nobody would ever see it.
