A guy at a Vegas barber shop taught me more about fading in 10 minutes than 2 years of videos
Was in Vegas for a wedding last month and ducked into a little shop off Fremont for a quick cleanup. The barber, older dude named Ray, watched me grip my clippers and just started laughing. He said "you're fighting the head, let the head come to you" and made me do three passes with my wrist locked instead of my elbow. Cut came out way cleaner than anything I've done at my chair back home. Anybody else pick up a trick from a random shop while traveling?
Man, this hits home because my fades look like I cut them in the dark with safety scissors. I've watched probably a hundred hours of tutorials and I still catch myself muscling the clippers around like I'm trying to start a lawnmower. That line about fighting the head is real though, every time I tense up my whole arm goes stiff and the blend turns into a staircase. Locking the wrist and letting the curve do the work makes so much sense now that I read it. I'm gonna try that on my next cut and probably still mess it up, but at least I'll know why.
