Blade tension debate: tight vs looser, 6 months apart

About 6 months back in Portland I switched from running my clippers with max tension to backing it off a quarter turn. At first I thought it dulled the cut, but now I'm convinced it's smoother on thick hair, less pulling. A mentor in Seattle swears the opposite, says loose blades chatter and leave lines. Has anyone else tested both ways and landed on a side, or is it just personal feel and not worth arguing over?

Quarter turn? That's wild, most folks I know wouldn't dare touch that sweet spot.

I see it the opposite way honestly. I ran loose for years on thick coarse hair and it walked all over the place, left those little tram lines you can’t buff out. Tight is where I landed, it holds the blade steady and cuts clean even if it feels like it drags a bit more. That quarter turn might work for you on finer hair, but on the heavy stuff I’ve had too many bad days with chatter to ever go back. Different tools, different hands, but I’d rather fight the drag than the lines.
