Clipper care has changed a lot since my first shop days

Back in 2004 at my first shop in Akron, we'd oil the blades with whatever 3-in-1 was lying around and only cleaned them out when they started screaming. Now I break down my Wahl Seniors every Sunday, soak the parts in a cleaning solution, and hit the blade with a fresh drop of clipper oil before every single head. The difference in how long the edges hold between sharpening is night and day, maybe 6 weeks longer each time. I wonder, did anyone else get trained the lazy way back then, or was it just our shop that never touched the screws until something broke?

Did your shop really just let em run dry like that? I learned the same way back in the day, except we used motor oil from the shop's spare jug. It worked okay but man, the blades got hot and dull way faster. Once I started taking the top plate off every couple weeks and wiping the gunk out with a rag, it made a huge difference. Now I just keep it simple, a drop of proper oil on the pivot point and a quick brush after each cut, and my stuff lasts forever.
