Ditched my clippers for shears on most haircuts and never looked back

For the first 4 years of barbering I used clippers on almost every head that came in, even for scissor cuts I'd start with a guard to remove bulk. About 6 months ago I had a client in Chicago who specifically asked for a dry shear cut and I had to admit I wasn't great at it. So I spent a weekend practicing on mannequins and now I only use clippers for fades and the initial bulk removal. The texture and movement you get from shears is totally different, especially on medium to long hair. My regulars started noticing the difference right away, one guy said his hair looked "lighter" even though I took off the same amount. Still working on speeding up my shear work though, any tips for getting cleaner sectioning without wasting time?

That's a solid point about them carrying themselves different. I've noticed that too, especially in guys who sit up a little straighter after a scissor cut, like they can actually feel their hair move. So what's your move for guys with really thick, coarse hair that just wants to lie flat? Do you find yourself texturizing more with the shears to keep it from looking too heavy, or are you still doing the initial bulk removal with clippers on those heads to save time? Because that's the thing I keep wrestling with, whether to commit fully to shears from the start or keep that one guard pass just to knock down the weight.

Adding shears changed how your clients carry themselves.
