I used to think the 'comb over the ear' trick was just for show, but after a client in Cincinnati kept complaining about his sideburns being uneven, I tried it and it actually locks the ear flat for a perfect line every time.
I was struggling with a regular client who has one ear that sticks out more, and after watching an old barber at a convention use his comb to gently fold the ear forward and hold it while he lined up the sideburn with his clippers, I tried it last Tuesday and haven't messed up a sideburn since, so what's your go-to trick for tricky ears?

Honestly, I'm just glad my barber remembers I exist. The guy I go to has this whole system of grunts and nods, and if you get the double nod after the cut, you know you're good. He uses his thumb to push my ear down when he does around there, no comb needed. Works fine, I guess. I'm more worried about the small talk than my sideburns.

Man @linda658, sounds like your barber's got a whole language going on there - I'd probably mess up and get the wrong grunt and end up with a bald spot or something lol. Honestly though, if the thumb trick works for him, who am I to judge? My guy does that weird comb fold thing and it looks like he's trying to give my ear a hug, but hey, my sideburns are finally straight so I'll take the weird ear cuddles.
