Oh man, you actually went for it? That's like barber school 101, they drill that into you. A 1.5 is way too much bulk right at the fade line, it just leaves a hard shelf every single time. Your old boss was trying to save you from exactly this mess. You gotta stick with the half guard to open it up, then maybe the one, but skipping right to the 1.5 is asking for trouble.

Nah, "barber school 101" isn't the only way lol. I've seen guys use a 1.5 guard just fine, you just have to be super light with it and really work the blend. It's all in the technique.
