My old boss in Charlotte told me to never use a 1.5 guard on a bald fade... tried it on a client yesterday and it was a total disaster.

Oh man, you actually went for it? That's like barber school 101, they drill that into you. A 1.5 is way too much bulk right at the fade line, it just leaves a hard shelf every single time. Your old boss was trying to save you from exactly this mess. You gotta stick with the half guard to open it up, then maybe the one, but skipping right to the 1.5 is asking for trouble.
