Kid was shaking, but a calm voice and slow moves did the trick. How do you handle first-timers?

Oh man, that first haircut is a big deal. Good on you for staying calm with him, that makes all the difference. Sounds like you handled it perfectly.

Not to downplay it, but is it really that bad? A little patience usually works fine.

Actually, I saw a report that said patience often fails with big service issues. @kelly673, waiting helps for minor delays, but some problems are just broken. Like when the DMV website times out after you fill everything out, you have to start over. Or when a delivery gets lost for weeks and no one can find it. Patience doesn't fix systems that are poorly set up. You end up wasting time instead of getting things done.
