Picked up a new clipper technique at that barber expo in Chicago last spring

Went to the Midwest Barber Expo in March and watched a dude from Detroit do a seamless fade using just his freehand and a trimmer. No guards, no combs, just wrist control and a steady hand. I've been practicing it for 3 months now and my blend game is way tighter. Has anyone else tried ditching guards for certain sections?

Man I gotta admit I was SUPER skeptical about that whole freehand trimmer thing at first. I thought it was just some instagram hype and nobody actually does it in a real shop. But after watching a few videos and trying it myself on some willing clients I totally changed my mind. It takes a lot of practice to get the angle right and not accidentally dig into the skin but once you get the hang of it the blends are way smoother than any guard could give you. The key for me was learning to keep the wrist LOCKED and move your whole arm instead of just flicking your hand around.
