Switched from clipper guards to freehand fading 6 months ago

I kept leaving lines with guards even after 4 years cutting, so I forced myself to go freehand with just my Andis Masters. Took about 10 rough haircuts before the blends started looking clean, but now I can't imagine going back - has anyone else made that jump and regretted it?

Whoa, TEN rough haircuts before it clicked? I gotta hand it to you, that's some serious patience (I probably would've given up after three). But hearing you say the blends look cleaner now actually makes me want to try it myself, even if my next few cuts end up looking like a lawnmower attacked my head.

Ten guards leave lines no matter how careful you are... that's just the nature of them. I get why @roberts.jordan would want to make the switch, but ten rough haircuts is a lot to push through for most people. The thing is, with clippers you can at least get a decent fade with practice, freehand has a much steeper learning curve. I'd say start with blending your guidelines instead of going full freehand right away, ease into it. That way you don't end up with three weeks of bad haircuts and give up completely. But once it clicks, yeah, the results are way smoother.
