Got the boot from a local gardening group for saying a rain barrel isn't a big deal
It was on the Nextdoor app for my town, Springfield. They have a big push for rain barrels to save water. I posted that while they are fine, the real water waste is from old toilets and shower heads, not watering a few petunias. I said I swapped a client's old toilet for a low flow model and it saved more water in a month than their barrel would catch all year. Someone called it 'defeatist' and the mod said I was 'undermining community efforts'. They banned me before I could even link the water usage charts from the city website. Now I just fix the leaks and skip the talk. Has anyone else been shut down for bringing up a practical fix over a popular idea?

Your Springfield story is so familiar.

Yeah but black.beth, I don't think it's just about feel good stuff. The rain barrel gets people started thinking about water. It's a visual thing they can do themselves. Telling them their toilet is the real problem can make them feel like they can't do anything unless they hire someone. Both things help, but the barrel gets more people in the game.

That's the worst, when you get shut down for just stating facts. Your point about toilets is totally right, it's a much bigger fix. Some groups just want the feel-good stuff, not the real work.
