Had to pick between reporting a toxic coworker or staying quiet
I worked at a small marketing agency in Austin for about 2 years. There was this one guy who kept taking credit for my work and making snide comments in meetings. I had to choose between filing an HR complaint or just letting it slide to keep the peace. I reported him after he stole my campaign data for a big client pitch. Got banned from the company Slack and eventually let go because they said I created a hostile work environment instead of dealing with it privately. Has anyone else gotten punished for speaking up about stuff like this?

Man that's rough, I've been there too. When I spoke up about a guy who kept taking my ideas in meetings, my manager just said I was being too sensitive and needed to work on team chemistry. Next thing I know I'm getting written up for not being a team player. It's like the system is built to protect the loudmouths and punish the people trying to do the right thing. Best advice I can give is document everything from day one. Save those emails, record those meeting dates, screenshot those Slack messages before they disappear. That way if they try to twist it around on you, you've got something solid to back yourself up.

Documentation is the only thing that saved my skin once. I kept a running log in a simple text file with dates, times, and exactly what was said, plus who was in the room. When HR tried to pin a "communication issue" on me, I pulled out the receipts showing I'd asked for clarification three times and got ignored. They folded pretty quick when they saw I had everything timed and dated. Just make sure you back up that file somewhere off your work computer too, because they can lock you out of your accounts instantly.

Heard a podcast once where an employment lawyer basically said the same thing. If it's not written down, it never happened. Smart move backing it up off the work computer too, that part's easy to forget until it's too late.
