A customer at the shop argued that a $20 chain checker is a waste of money

He said you can just measure chain stretch with a ruler and that the tool is just for upselling. I've seen guys get it wrong with a ruler and wear out a whole drivetrain, though. What's your shop's policy on checking for chain wear?

My old chain checker cost twelve bucks and lasted five years. That's like two cents per use. Seen too many people mess up the ruler method, especially on worn sprockets. A worn chain wrecks your whole drivetrain way faster. The tool just takes the guesswork out.

Right?! Same here. My buddy tried the ruler method and ended up replacing his whole cassette a month later. Twelve bucks is nothing for peace of mind, honestly.

It's the same with tire pressure gauges or torque wrenches... people try to save a few bucks and end up costing themselves way more. That cheap tool becomes the most expensive part when it leads to a bigger mistake. We see it everywhere now, trying to eyeball stuff that really needs a simple, clear measurement. Just makes you wonder why we fight the small, smart buys that prevent the big, dumb costs.
