Bought a $60 chain tool that snapped on the third pin, and the Park Tool rep just laughed at me
Turns out the off-brand one I grabbed at a swap meet in Cleveland had a soft jaw, so I ended up driving 40 minutes to a shop that had a real CT-3.2 in stock, and now I am wondering if anyone else has a cheap tool story that cost them more in gas than the tool itself.
Man, I used to be the guy telling everyone to just buy the cheap tool and save your money, because how different can two chunks of metal really be. Then my $15 chain breaker from Amazon bent its pin on a brand new 11 speed chain and I had to walk my bike two miles home in the rain. The replacement pin set cost almost as much as the tool, and the second pin bent too. My local guy sold me a used Park for $30 and it has done every chain since without a hiccup. Some tools you can cheap out on, but the ones that save you a walk home are not those tools.
