Heard a customer 'fix' his own bike with a hammer, now I check everything twice

Guy rolls into the shop yesterday in Portland with a bent derailleur hanger, says he 'straightened it out' with a framing hammer. Charged him $40 for a new one after I showed him the crack in the aluminum. It got me thinking, how many times do we trust a customer's story about what they did before actually looking? Has anyone else had a 'quick fix' from a rider turn into a bigger repair than the original problem?
