Nobody believed me when I said I fix stripped derailleur mount threads with a $4 brake bleeder, and I've done 9 of them now
Customer brought in a Trek with the hanger bolt hole completely chewed out. Every guy in the shop said tap it to the next size or send the frame back to the factory. I grabbed a syringe from my brake bleed kit, filled the hole with JB Weld, greased an M5 bolt, and threaded it in while the epoxy was still soft. Waited 24 hours, backed the bolt out, and that hole held a derailleur for two full seasons of gravel riding. Done it 9 times since, including on a $3,000 carbon frame a guy was about to scrap. Cost of the syringe was like 4 bucks. The epoxy was already in the drawer. Has anyone else tried molding threads this way instead of drilling and tapping, or am I just lucky?
Molding threads with epoxy is legit and I've been doing something close to it for years on stripped hanger holes. The trick that made mine last way longer was scoring the inside of the hole with a pick first so the epoxy has something to bite into, otherwise a smooth hole can let the whole plug spin out later. Also grease the bolt good, and if the hole is really wallowed out, wrap the bolt in a turn or two of teflon tape so you get a little more room for the epoxy to build up around it. Two seasons on gravel is no joke either, that stuff rattles bolts loose like nothing. Only thing I'd watch is heat, if the frame sits in a hot car the epoxy can soften some, so keep an eye on torque when you reinstall the derailleur.
