Switched from a chain scrubber to a plain old toothbrush and I am not going back
I picked up one of those $30 chain cleaning tools about a year ago because the reviews made it sound like magic. After maybe 15 uses on my commuter, I noticed it was missing the inner plates and the grit was just getting pushed around. Last month I went back to a $1 toothbrush, a jar of mineral spirits, and a rag, and the chain on my Surly came out cleaner in half the time. Has anyone else found the cheap manual method beats the fancy gadgets, or am I just slow with the tool?
The grit was just getting pushed around" is the whole problem with those things, they never actually flush anything out. A toothbrush gets in between the plates where the real junk hides, and mineral spirits actually dissolve the crud instead of smearing it. Ten bucks says you're not slow, the tool just sucks.
