Tension headache: I snapped a chain mid-ride in Austin, then another one 3 miles later

I was hammering up a hill near Town Lake when my chain let go, snapped clean at the pin. Fixed it with a quick link, got back going, then the same thing happened on the next climb. My question is, are cheap chains just that bad, or was I doing something wrong with my indexing and tension from the start, has anyone else had a double snap like that?
