The bike I was rebuilding had a stripped bottom bracket shell from a previous owner's overtorquing

I was in my garage last Saturday working on a 90s steel frame that came into the shop. Previous owner had put a new crank on it and must have cranked the bottom bracket cup in with an impact gun. I tried a pipe wrench and then a cup removal tool but the aluminum cup just spun in the shell. Ended up having to cut the cup out with a hacksaw blade, piece by piece. Took about 90 minutes. When I finally got it out I could see the threads were completely flattened in two spots. Anyone ever had luck with a thread chase kit on a stripped steel frame or is that frame toast?

Used to think thread chases were magic until I tried one on a similar stripped shell and it just made things worse.

Oh come on, a thread chase will fix that right up, people overthink this stuff way too much!
