Tried using a Park Tool spoke tension meter on a cheap wheel build...

Got totally different readings on the same spokes depending on how I held it. Left side spokes were reading way low so I kept tightening them, ended up with a wonky rim that took forever to true. Is the meter really that sensitive to technique or did I just get a bad one?

Yeah I destroyed my first rim the EXACT same way, thought I had some kind of secret genius technique for over-tensioning spokes. Turns out I just suck at holding the meter straight.

Oh man, the Park Tool tension meter is super finicky about exactly where and how you place it on the spoke. I had the exact same issue on my first build, kept cranking on the left side and ended up with a rim shaped like a potato chip before I figured out I was just holding it wrong.
