Update: That time in Portugal when a roadside fix changed my whole approach
I was cycling through the hills near Lisbon when my rear brake gave out. Had to use a piece of wire from a fence to get it working. Now I think mechanics rely too much on perfect parts. Real skill is making do with what you have. That trip showed me what matters.

What if that wire had snapped on a steep hill though? Relying on random stuff you find sounds more like luck than skill. Good mechanics use the right parts for a reason, because they're tested and safe. Making do can get you home, but it's not a real fix you can trust. Having the proper tools and parts shows you actually respect the machine and your own safety. Sometimes real skill is knowing when a quick fix isn't good enough.

Oh man, the number of times I've seen someone roll in with a "fix" that's just hope and a prayer holding it together. Like yeah, your soda can shim and duct tape masterclass got you here, but trusting that on a hill is basically playing chicken with gravity. Real skill is admitting your baling wire solution shouldn't survive the next pothole, let alone a steep grade. It's not about being fancy, it's about not having your brake line made of literal trash.

Used to think getting home with any fix was the real win. Your point about the steep hill made me picture it failing at the worst time. I guess a safe, proper repair is the better skill to have.
