Finally realized subtitles were wrecking my drama nights
For two years I watched every prestige show with subtitles on, thinking I was catching more nuance. Then I rewatched an episode of Sharp Objects without them and realized I'd been reading the dialogue so hard I missed half the visual acting, like the way Amy Adams' face does all the work. My wife pointed it out after I complained a character's motivation made no sense, and she said 'maybe stop reading and start watching.' Now I only turn them on for heavy accents or quiet mumble scenes, and honestly my enjoyment went up way more than I thought it would. Anyone else have a similar moment where the way you watched was the actual problem?
Waited two whole years before you figured that out? I can't believe your wife let you suffer that long without saying anything sooner. Once she finally told you, it makes total sense that reading the words pulls your eyes off the faces doing the real work. Guess the remote was in your hands the whole time, not the subtitles.
