Picked subtitles over dubbed for a Korean drama, no regrets
I had a tough call last week between watching a show dubbed or with subtitles. My friend swore by the dub since she multitasks, but I went with subs because the acting felt more real. Took about 20 minutes to get used to reading fast, but I caught way more emotion in the voices. Now I can't go back, anyone else feel like dubs ruin the vibe?
Something people rarely bring up is how the subtitle track itself gets made. Dubs have to match the mouth flaps, so the script gets rewritten to fit the timing. Subs usually stay closer to what the writer actually wrote, which means you are often getting a truer version of the story, not just the acting. That said, subs are not always perfect either. Some streaming services rush them out and you get stiff, broken lines that miss jokes or tone. So the real gap is not subs versus dubs, it is who did the work and how much care they put in. A good dub can beat a lazy sub and the other way around.
