A master smith told me my welds were 'too pretty' and it broke my brain

He said I was over-cleaning the plate before welding, making it look neat but weak at the toes. Stopped grinding everything shiny, now I test my welds by beating them with a sledge and they hold way better. Anyone else get told to ugly up their work for strength?

My buddy cleaned his welds till they gleamed, then his trailer hitch snapped right off on the highway.
