Finally nailed my first forge weld after 4 failed tries, the borax trick from a guy in Abilene did it
Turned my old farrier rasp into a usable damascus billet on Saturday and I'm still grinning about it, so what's the one tip that finally made forge welding click for you?
Man I burned through like six of my grandpa's old files before I figured out my problem was the steel was too cold going in. A guy showed me to watch the color and wait till it looks like a stick of butter sweating, then flux with borax and it just sticks. My first "weld" was really just two pieces of metal I mashed together that popped apart the second I hit it with a hammer.
