I mean, maybe it's just me but I finally got my forge welds to stick every time by just adding a pinch of borax from the grocery store baking aisle.

Grocery store borax... that's a solid tip. Reminds me of when I was trying to fix an old cast iron pan and someone told me to use salt and potato skins to scrub it. Sometimes the old kitchen tricks just work.

That salt and potato skin trick is wild, never heard that one before. Did it actually work to get all the rust and gunk off, or did you have to follow up with something else? I've got a pan that's in rough shape and I'm trying to avoid using harsh chemicals on it.

Oh man, that potato skin trick is one of those things that sounds too weird to work but actually does! I used it on an old pan I found at a yard sale and it took off a surprising amount of rust without much elbow grease. But yeah you gotta follow up with a good rinse and maybe a little scrub with soap and a soft sponge after. It's funny how the best solutions are usually the cheapest and simplest ones, like using salt as an abrasive instead of some fancy chemical. That's the thing I've noticed in life - a lot of the time we overcomplicate stuff when the old school methods work just fine. So yeah give it a shot, worst case you waste a potato and some salt.
