Just realized I was overthinking my forge welding temps after a 30 year smith told me he works at a dull cherry red

Old timer named Chuck at the guild meetup last Friday said I was burning my steel with those high numbers, so I tried his way on a billet and it stuck first try, anyone else been chasing the wrong heat this whole time?

Man I had a buddy who swore by welding at almost black heat, swore it made the pattern pop better.

Tried that trick on a billet of 1080 and 15N20 once, worked a treat for bringing out the contrast without the glare. Did you ever give it a shot yourself?
