Just realized my old way of quenching a leaf spring knife in Wichita was totally wrong

My first attempt at quenching in Wichita involved a five-gallon bucket from the hardware store and a prayer. The blade came out looking like a potato chip. Oliver's right about the water, but my old method was less trial and error and more error with a side of panic. I guess I skipped the part where you actually learn what you're doing.

Honestly I just switched to canola oil after my first blade warped and never looked back.

Hold up, wrong how? That Wichita water has a specific mineral content that can actually work great for some steels. If your blade didn't crack and holds an edge, what's the problem? Sometimes the old way works just fine because it was figured out through trial and error, not a textbook.
