Spent $40 on an infrared thermometer for the forge and it beat my eyeballs every time
For years I judged my steel color by eye and figured that was just part of the craft. Then a guy at a hammer-in near Dayton let me borrow his $40 infrared thermometer on a batch of 1084 and I was running about 150 degrees hot on my quench temps without knowing it. My first test blade after that actually held an edge through a stump chop instead of rolling over. Idk if it's just me but I think my eyes were lying to me for a decade. Anyone else using one of these, and do you trust it more than color on the higher ranges?
Same thing happened to me, ran way hot on my quench for like two years and couldn't figure out why my edges kept chipping. Bought a cheap one off Amazon and turns out my "cherry red" was more like orange the whole time. Now I check it every few heats even up past non-magnetic, the numbers don't lie like my eyes do.
