Tried quenching a small blade in canola oil at 130 degrees and the hamon came out blotchy
I had read that warm oil helps speed up the quench on 1084, so I heated a jug of canola to about 130 degrees and dunked a little hunter blade I forged for my brother in law. The edge hardened fine but the hamon line came out patchy and washed out compared to the room temp quench I did on the last one, maybe because the oil moved too fast around the steel. I think I poured the oil in too shallow a pan in my shop here in Peoria, so the tip hit the bottom and cooled uneven. Anyone running warm canola for 1084, and if so how deep is your quench tank?
