A guy at the shop told me Terraforming Mars needs the draft or it's broken, and after 40 plays I think he's dead wrong
Back in 2022 a guy named Dev at my Tuesday group in Fresno told me I was playing Terraforming Mars wrong if I didn't use the card draft. I tried it for about 15 games and it just stretched a 2 hour game to 3 hours with four players, plus it killed the whole point of building an engine instead of just hatedrafting whoever got ahead. My win rate actually went up when I dropped the draft and went back to plain draw 4 keep what you want. Dev was right that drafting adds control, but control isn't the same as fun, and our table votes every time now. Anyone else skip a popular variant because it just made game night longer?
Wait, are you me from the future? Because I had almost the exact same thing happen, except my guy was named Rick and it was a Wednesday. I stuck with the draft for a whole year thinking I was just bad at it, and my win rate tanked because I kept grabbing cards to block other people instead of cards that actually helped my board. Once I went back to draw four keep what you want, games got shorter and I actually had fun building my engine again instead of playing defense the whole time. These days our group just asks before setup, and if someone wants to draft, we let them find three other people who feel the same way.
