A retiree at my local game store in Boise ran a 6 player Catan table and made me rethink how I teach new folks
I stopped by a game store in Boise last month and watched a guy who has been playing since the 90s run a 6 player Catan game for a table of total first timers. Instead of explaining every rule up front, he just dealt the board, gave everyone two starting spots, and let them learn by doing, calling out rules only when they came up. That whole game took 2 hours and 15 minutes and every single new player said they had fun, which almost never happens when I teach. I've been doing the big 30 minute rules dump for years and I'm starting to think that's why half my friends never come back for a second game. Has anyone else tried the just start playing method, and does it fall apart with heavier games like Brass or Spirit Island?
