DAE think house rules secretly ruin games more than they fix them?
Last month at my Tuesday game night in Austin, we added a house rule to a 3 hour euro game that let everyone draw an extra card each turn, and suddenly every game ended in a runaway leader blowout by round 4. Now half my group wants to keep it because "it's faster" and the other half keeps arguing it wrecked the balance of a game we used to love. Do you all stick to the printed rules or house rule everything, and which side has actually made your group happier long term?
Played a game once where our house rule didn't speed anything up, it just moved the randomness around. We let people mulligan bad starting hands and everyone felt great about it until we realized the whole first turn was now just people fishing for their best opener instead of playing the hand they got. The real damage wasn't balance, it was that the game stopped asking us to deal with bad luck, which was kind of the whole point of the design. House rules tend to quietly delete the parts of a game that make it tense, and you don't notice until the tension is gone and nobody can say why it feels flat.
