Guy at a game night told me I was playing way too defensive

I used to always turtle up in games like Scythe and Terraforming Mars, hoarding resources and never taking risks. Last month at a meetup in Denver, this guy named Mark watched me hold onto 12 steel for three rounds and just said 'you're playing scared, just spend it.' He was right. I started pushing out buildings and units way earlier and my scores went up by about 20 points on average. Now I force myself to take at least one big action before the halfway point. Anyone else get called out for playing too safe and actually improved from it?

That Mark sounds like the hero we all needed but didn't deserve. @the_dakota is right though - I basically sat there broadcasting my entire strategy while hoarding imaginary resources like a dragon with a hoarding problem. I once held onto resources so long in Terraforming Mars that my friends started calling the planet "Garbage Dump" because I never actually built anything with them.

Honestly, playing safe just means you're giving everyone else information while hiding yours.
