My brother called my game nights 'homework with snacks' and I can't stop thinking about it
So my brother came over for game night last Saturday, first time in like 8 months because he travels for work, and we played a mid weight euro for about two hours. He was nice about it the whole time, but when we were packing up he said something like 'this feels like homework with snacks, I never know if we're playing to have fun or to prove we understand the rules.' I laughed it off at the time and we moved on, but it's been eating at me all week. The thing is, we ran a 5 player game of something with asymmetric powers and I spent the first 15 minutes doing a teach while everyone stared at their player boards, and yeah, I could feel the energy in the room drop. My wife even said afterward that she likes the games but hates that the first hour of every night is basically a lecture. I've spent probably close to $400 this year on heavier stuff, and now I'm wondering if I've been building a collection for me and not for the group. Do you all do a lighter opener before the big teach, or am I just overthinking one comment from a guy who mostly plays phone games?
Have you tried asking your group what they actually want out of game night? My husband and I started doing a quick filler game first and it totally changed the mood, people relax and chat before the heavy rules come out. One offhand comment can sting, but your brother probably just meant he missed the easy fun part, not that he hates your games.
