My favorite game night group fell apart after one player kept cheating on secret roles

It happened last Thursday when I caught our buddy Mike peeking at his role card during The Resistance for the third time, and I had to call a whole vote to kick him out which killed the vibe for everyone. Has anyone else had to boot a regular player from their group over something like this?

I saw a post on a gaming subreddit last month where someone had the same thing happen with a buddy during Coup, and the whole group just stopped playing hidden role games for a year. Mike peeking at his card three times doesn't seem like a small thing, it shows he wasn't respecting the game or the group. When that trust breaks, the whole vibe gets wrecked because everyone's just watching each other instead of playing. Did you guys try talking to him first before calling the vote, or did it all go down in that one night?

Three times in one night is crazy, that's not even subtle. I mean, me and my group had a guy who would just glance down at his card in Secret Hitler whenever someone made a claim he didn't believe, and we all called him out after the second time. It's not even about winning or losing at that point, it's about the whole trust thing you're talking about. Once you start watching for peeks instead of reading bluffs, the game just turns into a surveillance thing and nobody has fun. My guess is they probably were all too awkward to bring it up during the night and just let it build up until the vote.
