My friend told me to always bring a backup game to game night, and last Friday proved him right!

What went wrong with the main game you had planned? Did it just fall flat or did something break?

I saw a developer interview where they admitted the core gameplay loop just wasn't fun after the first hour. They kept adding features to fix it, which made the whole thing messy and confusing. It was a classic case of not having a solid foundation to build on.

My buddy Mike tried building a game in Unity back in 2018, spent like 8 months on a physics based platformer. He bragged about the tech demo, but after 20 minutes of playtesting, the jumping felt like you were on ice and the grapple hook never landed where you aimed. Instead of fixing the core movement, he added a shop system and 4 different weapon types, then wondered why nobody wanted to playtest more than once. The whole thing just got buried under all these half-baked features that tried to cover up the fact that running and jumping wasn't fun.
