My last board game night bombed because I picked a 4-hour game for a mixed crowd

I brought out Twilight Imperium last Saturday thinking my group would love the political backstabbing but two players checked out after the first hour. One guy kept scrolling his phone and the other said "this feels like work" around hour three. How do you figure out if a game's too heavy before you commit to the whole night?

Have you ever tried doing a "test run" with the game's first turn or two before committing to a full session? I actually started pulling out games like Root or Dune: Imperium and just playing the opening rounds with a group - no promises to finish, just seeing if the vibes stick. Once I did that, people who were on the fence could bail without guilt, and those who leaned in actually got hyped for the full game next time. Worked way better than forcing a big box through the whole night.

And honestly that testing approach works because it takes the pressure off. If people aren't into it after one round, you can just pack it up and grab something shorter without anyone feeling like they wasted a whole evening.
