Our regular group at the Denver library had a huge fight over a house rule for Catan.

It started when Mark said his 'longest road' was blocked by a new player who didn't know the rule, and he yelled at her. The whole night got ruined and two people quit the group for good. How do you handle rule arguments without making new players feel awful?

Ngl I get where you're coming from but yelling at a new player over a game rule is just gonna scare them off for good. A calm "hey just so you know that rule works like this" goes way further than making someone feel dumb for not knowing the rules yet.

Bro yelled over a board game? It's plastic sheep and wood, not a court case. Just explain the rule and move on.

Actually, those plastic sheep and wood represent hours of strategy and focus. When someone breaks a clear rule, it feels like cheating, and cheating ruins the whole point of playing. A calm talk is best, but strong feelings show people care about the game being fair. Dismissing it as just toys misses why we play games with friends in the first place. The rules are what make the game fun and fair for everyone at the table.
