Pro tip: Don't ever skip rulebook reading at a new game night

I showed up to a friend's place last week where they were playing Blood Rage for the first time and the host skimmed the rules. We ended up arguing for 20 minutes about whether you could fight in the same region twice. I learned you have to read the whole thing out loud first no matter how long it takes. Oh, I actually think skimming is fine (dare I say better) because reading the whole rulebook out loud is a guaranteed way to kill the hype before the game even starts. Half the fun of new games is figuring out the edge cases on the fly with your friends. But a lot of modern games have rules that rely on specific wording to stop things from breaking completely. Then you're either house-ruling it or having to backtrack, which feels worse than just reading it upfront.
